Jimmy Driving

Back when he was still in his prime, our late tom-cat Jimmy was known for his decidedly stubborn character as well as his buddyness. And, for his intense caution toward venturing farther than about a yard into the stairwell of our building, much less going outdoors.

All the more astonishing, when I awoke one afternoon from a vivid dream in which I had stepped outside onto our narrow one-way street in front of our address, only to find Jimmy sitting at the wheel, parked facing the wrong way, in our family stationwagon. I was frankly speechless at this, as we have no such car, nor any for that matter.

I scolded him of course, for even thinking of driving off like this, counter-traffic on a one-way. He couldn't have been more unmoved by my argument or my irritation. So being the human in this situation, I took charge and tried to grab the keys, He wouldn't have it. I convinced him to at least let me repark it for him. Characteristically shrugging his shoulders and remaining unimpressed, he let me do that much.

I got the car turned around, and he'd left me there, returning to the flat with marked indifference. This was typical of his behavior. We kept the car locked after that little episode.
